And seven reasons to spend a summer day there
Fairytale monsters in the forest. The ruins of a forgotten military base. Fish that swim right up to you. Ninigret Park seems too enchanting to be real. But anyone can visit and explore these 227 acres in southern Rhode Island for free.
Notes and Miscellanea
- Like most indigenous figures, Ninigret isn’t well known in Rhode Island, nor his accomplishments as courageous leader in dangerous times. A comprehensive biography of his life is Ninigret, Sachem of the Niantics and Narragansetts, by Julie A. Fisher and David J. Silverman. A stirring memorial to Ninigret stands in the Village Park in Watch Hill.
- The Frosty Drew Observatory is arguably the best in the state, due to its remote location and limited light pollution.
- Ironically, only a handful of Dambo’s troll sculptures exist in his native Europe; far more have been built and installed in North America. To find the closest one, visit Dambo’s online Trollmap.
