Revisiting the Mountains of New Hampshire

A man stands at the edge of a lake in Franconia Notch, New Hampshire.

A drive through the Presidential Range conjures memories of father-son excursions.

The Presidential Range in New Hampshire is one of the most beautiful regions in New England. For a father and his young son, the medium-sized mountains are ripe for exploration.

Notes and Miscellanea

  • Mt. Adams. Mt. Jefferson. Mt. Washington. Most of the peaks in the Presidential Range of New Hampshire are, in fact, named after U.S. heads of state.
  • The “hut system” was a completely foreign concept, despite growing up in neighboring Vermont. These huts are strangely luxurious, with resident staff, exquisite meals, and busy communal spaces. In most cases, food and supplies are carried in on foot. The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) has hosted thru-hikers and families since 1876, making it the oldest nonprofit conservation and recreation organization in the United States.
  • While climbing Mt. Lafayette, more than one passing hiker exclaimed, “How old is he?” The answer—seven years—led to a good number of raised eyebrows and dropped jaws.
