What do the Green Mountains, the Berkshires, and Monongahela National Forest all have in common? They’re all part of the Appalachian Mountains, which dapple the Eastern Seaboard for more than 2,000 miles.

This landscape can be hard to appreciate; the dense forests and rocky terrain resist easy access, even on the hallowed Appalachian Trail. But this summer yielded satisfying hikes, thrilling rapids, and dogged mountaineering in one of the oldest ranges.

• The reason for all these excursions? Research for two different books: Lonely Planet Journey Appalachian Trail and Lonely Planet’s New York & Mid-Atlantic Guide, which should both hit shelves in May, 2027.
• The one thing missing from this video was a single shot from birthplace of Susan B. Anthony, which is now an impressive museum outside of Adams, Massachusetts. The footage ended up misplaced in the shuffle, but it should be placed in the sequence of “rebellious” landmarks.
