The Edge of the Ocean

A man picks oysters out of a cage in the Brewster Flats.

A visit to a Cape Cod resort is a prime excuse to relax, eat well, and learn where oysters come from.

Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club is a sprawling estate in the crook of Cape Cod. Unlike the traditional inns and B&Bs that the peninsula is known for, Ocean Edge is often described as “a cruise ship on land,” and guests can pick from a long menu of activities. One such activity: an oyster tour in the Brewster Flats. During low tide, the flats are shallow enough to wade across—and see hundreds of oyster cages up close.

Notes and Miscellanea

  • Like so much of Cape Cod, Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club has a storied past. The wealthy Nickerson family built a mansion with coastal views in 1890. Half a century later, the La Salette religious order used the property as a seminary. In the 1980s, it was converted into a resort and golf club, one of the most prominent in southeastern Massachusetts.
  • This video only hints at all of Ocean Edge’s activities; you’ll also find a full spa, fitness classes, live music, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding, organized bonfires on the beach, and a parade of weddings throughout the year. Thousands of guests stay here just to play the 18-hole golf course.
  • Long before he founded Brewster Oysters, Brian Daley grew up nearby—within view of the oyster cages, actually—and apprenticed with local shellfish legend Chip Ellis. Daley is a busy guy; he owns Brian Daley Construction and works primarily as a builder of residential properties.
