One winter, you stay in a yurt with your family. Vermont has lots of yurts for rent, and you’ve long been curious about the famed Mongolian dwellings.
What do they look like inside? How do owners find furniture for the rounded walls? Are they still mounted on wheeled platforms, as in the times of Genghis Khan?
The reality of this modern yurt is pretty tame. An enclosed bathroom is built into the center, and the kitchen is set with a homey sink and counter. A futon lies flat in a loft, with a circular skylight just above—in this case, caked in snow. You adjust quickly, and the well-insulated walls keep the place cozy all night. There are certainly simpler yurts on the market, but this is the kind of place you could imagine living in for weeks or months, given the chance.
You spend most of your time noshing and snoozing; these are highlights of a Vermont winter, when human hibernation actually feels possible. But inspiration strikes, and you find a few minutes to sketch your surroundings.
