First Ride of the Year

A cyclist rides past a giant pile of snow.

Just a slight thaw is all you need—to take the bike for a long-awaited spin.

Storm after storm hits your town, coating every street and sidewalk in snow. Despite your durable tires, there’s just no way to pedal through the powder, ditto frozen crusts and stretches of ice. Once the mercury reads 45°, though, a restless cyclist just can’t turn down the opportunity.

Notes & Miscellanea

  • Footage shot across Pawtucket and Providence, Rhode Island.
  • You might have been more cavalier this winter, except for a slip on the ice in November; having biked all across town in the middle of the night, you fell sideways in the parking lot of your complex, just a few steps from your front door. You walked away without even a scrape, but you know how lucky this was; any cyclist is just one fall away from a busted kneecap or shattered wrist.
  • 1,000 miles has felt ambitious in recent years; you traversed only 809 miles in 2025, and a paltry 765.6 miles in 2024. The biggest impediment isn’t desire or motivation, but the finite number of free hours.
